A Graduate’s Perspective – One Year In!
May 2020 will mark my one year as a graduate in DFC. Looking back, I have definitely arrived at a position which suits both my interest and skill set I developed at university. I feel very lucky to be where I am right now.
As an international graduate kicking off my engineering career at DFC, I remember I was a bit nervous when I joined the team. But I settled in immediately as I found myself surrounded by the friendly demeanour and sense of humour of our team members.
From day one I was given the opportunity to get involved with exciting project work. Our team has supported me every step of the way to help me gain the confidence and ability to work on diverse projects of various scales. In the past year, I have been responsible for developing fire strategies on various residential and office building projects under the guidance of different project leaders.
I was particularly enthusiastic to get involved with simulation analysis type of work as it is linked with some research interests I had at university. I was also given the opportunity to get out on construction site to get some hands-on experience. Witnessing how our design has made it to skyscrapers brings enormous satisfaction to an engineering mind. Thanks to the project opportunities presented to me combined with a great level of mentorship, I was able to stretch and develop myself in different areas.
Additionally, DFC has been keen to take the lead in the industry and come up with innovative solutions to technical challenges. We have annual CPD sessions in collaboration with University of Edinburgh, to ensure we are at the forefront at our disciplines. I attended our 2019 CPD days and had a fantastic learning experience at University of Edinburgh. It was such a great opportunity for us to develop fundamental knowledge in the science behind our design, gain practical experience in the fire lab, as well as engage in heated debate with academia on industry trends and concerns.
To sum up, I have really enjoyed my journey at DFC and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. I would like to welcome recent graduates to apply for DFC if you have eagerness to learn, a positive approach and a transferable skill set. Join our company who are passionate about engineering and become a valued member of our team!
